介绍
In the life of a practicing Muslim, performing the daily prayers is a regular routine. However, a common struggle that many of us face is the battle against distraction. We stand in prayer physically, but our minds are busy with work projects, family responsibilities, or yesterday's conversations. In Islamic terminology, the heart and soul of prayer is Khushu. Khushu can be translated as focus, humility, mindfulness, and presence of mind before Allah. Without Khushu, Salah becomes a set of empty physical movements. In this guide, we explore the deep meaning of Khushu and share practical tips to help you find focus in your prayers.
When a believer has Khushu, their heart is filled with two emotions:
- Awe and Reverence: A deep awareness of the greatness, majesty, and power of Allah (SWT) before Whom they stand.
In the Quran, Allah links the success of the believers directly to their focus in prayer. It is not just about praying; it is about how we pray.
"Successful indeed are the believers: those who are humble in their prayers." — Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:1-2
By putting Khushu as the very first quality of successful believers, Allah shows that this focus is the key to spiritual success.
Furthermore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned that a person only receives reward for the portion of their prayer they were conscious of:
"A servant may offer a prayer and nothing is written down for him of it except a tenth, a ninth, an eighth, a seventh, a sixth, a fifth, a fourth, a third, or a half." —
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught his companions to treat each prayer as their final farewell to this world, which naturally increases focus.
Sunan Ibn Majah
If we knew that the prayer we are performing right now is our very last deed before meeting Allah, our focus would naturally be absolute.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught us to seek refuge from the specific devil who specializes in distracting worshippers:
"A companion said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the devil comes between me and my prayer.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'That is a devil called Khinzab. When you feel his presence, seek refuge in Allah from him and spit (a dry hiss) three times to your left.'" — Narrated by Uthman bin Abi al-As, Collected in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 2203)
Section 4: Practical Steps to Build Khushu
Achieving focus in prayer requires effort before, during, and after the prayer. Here are five practical steps:
1. Prepare Before the Prayer (The Pre-Salah phase)
2. Understand What You Say
Take time to study the translation of Surah Al-Fatihah and the phrases of bowing and prostration. When you understand the words, your mind has something to focus on.
(Tumani'nah)
Give each posture its due time. Pause for a second after rising from bowing before going to prostration. Stillness in movement leads to stillness in the heart.
4. Fix Your Gaze
Keep your eyes fixed on the spot where your forehead touches the ground during standing, bowing, and prostration. Do not look around or close your eyes (unless looking at something distracting).
Common Questions (FAQ)
The general ruling is that it is disliked (Makruh) to close the eyes during prayer, as the Sunnah is to keep the eyes open and look at the place of prostration. However, if there are bright lights, moving patterns, or other major distractions in front of you, closing your eyes to maintain focus is permissible.
3. What should I do if a baby is crying while I pray?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to shorten his recitation in prayer when he heard a baby crying to avoid causing distress to the mother. If you are praying and a child is in distress, you can complete the prayer quickly but correctly, and even pick up the child during prayer if necessary.
When you realize your mind has drifted to work or chores, gently bring your focus back to the meaning of the words you are reciting. Do not get frustrated; the effort to constantly bring your focus back is itself rewarded by Allah.
Silent prayers lack the auditory anchor of the Imam's loud voice. To counter this, make a conscious effort to move your tongue and lips, whispering the words quietly to yourself (so that only you can hear), which helps keep your mind engaged.
