Duas After Salah: Sunnah Supplications and Dhikr

Learn the recommended Duas, Tasbih, and Dhikr to recite after completing your obligatory prayers according to the Sunnah.

Introduction

When we complete our daily prayers with the Taslim (saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah"), the worship does not end immediately. The moments directly following the obligatory prayers are highly blessed times when supplications (Duas) are accepted, and sins are forgiven. Unfortunately, many Muslims rush to stand up and leave the prayer mat the moment the prayer is over, missing out on this spiritual treasure. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established a beautiful set of supplications, praises, and Quranic verses to be recited after every prayer. In this guide, we explore the recommended Sunnah Dhikr (remembrance) and Duas to recite after your Salah.

Section 1: The Core Sunnah Dhikr and Tasbih

The Prophet (peace be upon him) followed a structured routine of remembrance after completing the Fard prayers. Here is the recommended sequence:

1. Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness)

Begin by saying three times:

"Astaghfirullah" (I seek forgiveness from Allah).

2. Affirming Peace

Then recite:

"Allahumma Antas-Salam wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram." (O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor.)

3. Declaration of Monotheism

Recite:

"La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadeer..." (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partners. To Him belongs kingdom and praise, and He has power over all things...)

4. Tasbih of Fatimah

Recite:

  • SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah) β€” 33 times
  • Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) β€” 33 times
  • Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) β€” 33 times

Complete the hundredth declaration by saying: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu..."

Section 2: Reciting Quranic Verses for Protection

The Sunnah highly encourages reciting specific verses of the Quran after each prayer to seek protection and spiritual height.

Ayat al-Kursi (The Verse of the Throne)

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) after every obligatory prayer is one of the most powerful habits a Muslim can develop.

Regarding this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi immediately after each obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and entering Paradise except death." β€” Narrated by Abu Umamah, Collected in Sunan al-Kubra (an-Nasa'i)

The Mu'awwidhat (Surahs of Protection)

Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas once after Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha, and three times each after Fajr and Maghrib.

Section 3: Quranic Basis of Post-Prayer Dhikr

The Holy Quran explicitly commands the believers to remember Allah after they have finished their formal prayers, showing that remembrance should be continuous.

Allah (SWT) says:

"And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides..." β€” Surah An-Nisa, 4:103

This constant flow of Dhikr keeps the heart tied to the divine energy of worship even as we return to our daily duties.

Section 4: Hadith on the Rewards of Post-Salah Supplications

The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained that our sins can be wiped away completely through the simple practice of the Tasbih after prayer.

In an authentic narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever glorifies Allah (says SubhanAllah) thirty-three times after every prayer, praises Allah (says Alhamdulillah) thirty-three times, and declares His greatness (says Allahu Akbar) thirty-three times, making ninety-nine, and completes the hundred with: 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone...'β€”his sins will be forgiven even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea." β€” Narrated by Abu Hurairah, Collected in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 597)

When asked which supplication is most heard by Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied:

"In the last part of the night and after the obligatory prayers." β€” Narrated by Abu Umamah, Collected in Sunan at-Tirmidhi

Section 5: Practical Lessons: Building the Dhikr Habit

To integrate this beautiful Sunnah into your daily life:

  1. Do Not Stand Up Immediately: Make it a rule that you will remain seated for at least three minutes after the Taslim to complete the basic Dhikr.
  2. Use Your Right Hand Fingers: Count the Tasbih using the joints of your right hand fingers, as it is a Sunnah. The Prophet said the fingers will be questioned and made to speak on the Day of Judgment.
  3. Keep a Dhikr Card or App: Keep a small card with the transliteration of the post-Salah Duas near your prayer mat until you have memorized them.
  4. Ponder the Meaning: As you recite "SubhanAllah", reflect on Allah's perfection; as you say "Alhamdulillah", feel genuine gratitude for your blessings.
  5. Teach Your Children: Recite the post-prayer supplications out loud with your family or children after praying together to help them memorize and adopt the habit.

Common Questions (FAQ)

1. Do I need to raise my hands for Dua after the Fard prayer?

While raising the hands is a general etiquette of making Dua that makes it more likely to be accepted, doing it collectively in unison after every Fard prayer is considered an innovation (Bid'ah) by some scholars, while others consider it permissible. It is best to make your silent, personal supplications individually, raising your hands at times and reciting the Sunnah Dhikr without raising hands at other times.

2. Can I recite the post-Salah Dhikr while walking out of the Masjid?

Yes, if you are in a hurry or need to return to work, you can recite the Tasbih and Ayat al-Kursi while walking or driving. While sitting on the prayer mat is preferred, remembering Allah in any clean state is highly rewarded.

3. What if I forgot to recite the Tasbih?

If you forgot and stood up, and a long time has not passed, you can sit down and recite them. If you remember much later, you have missed the specific reward for that prayer, but you can still make general Dhikr.

4. Why are some Duas recited three times after Fajr and Maghrib?

Fajr and Maghrib mark the beginning of the day and night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized reciting specific protective Duas and Surahs three times during these transitions to ensure protection through the day and night.

5. Can I use a Tasbih (rosary beads) to count?

Yes, using a Tasbih (prayer beads) or a digital tally counter to count the Dhikr is permissible and accepted by the majority of scholars, especially if it helps you keep count. However, using the fingers of the right hand remains the preferred Sunnah method.
