Zakat on Stocks, Investments & Modern Financial Assets

Zakat rules for stocks, shares, mutual funds, retirement accounts, and modern financial instruments in Hanafi Fiqh and Aala Hazrat.

Introduction

Modern financial markets introduce investment vehicles like equities, mutual funds, and pension accounts.

In applying the classical Hanafi methodology of Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Ψ±ΨΩ…Ω‡ Ψ§Ω„Ω„Ω‡ ΨΉΩ„ΩŠΩ‡) (Fatawa Razawiyyah, Vol. 10), investments are evaluated based on ownership control (Milk-e-Taam) and trade intention (Niyyat-ut-Tijarah).

Section 1: Stocks & Equities

  1. Short-Term Resale Trading Shares (Day Trading / Swing Trading): Treated as trade stock (Maal-e-Tijarat). Zakatable at full current market value on your Zakat date (2.5%).
  2. Long-Term Investment Shares (Held for Dividends): Zakat is calculated on the underlying liquid assets (cash + inventory) proportion of the company, or on net accumulated dividend cash.

Section 2: Important Scholarly Disclaimer

Scholarly Verification Disclaimer: Complex modern financial instruments (cryptocurrency, speculative options, unvested stock options, complex derivatives) require individual consultation with a qualified Mufti or Dar-ul-Ifta. SALAH Live does not invent unverified modern rulings.
