Introduction
In Islamic Shariah, freedom from immediate debt (Khuluwwun anid-Dain) is a prerequisite condition for Zakat obligation. Immediate debts owed to other human beings (Dain-ud-Aadami) reduce a person's Zakatable asset pool.
In Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10 - Istithna-ud-Dain) and Bahar-e-Shariat (Part 5), Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (رحمه الله عليه) explains which debts qualify for deduction and how long-term liabilities are treated under Hanafi jurisprudence.
Section 1: Allowable Immediate Debt Deductions
Debts that can be subtracted from your gross Zakatable assets must be currently due and demanded by creditors on your Zakat date:
Deductible Liabilities:
- Immediate Personal Loans: Money borrowed from family or friends that is due for repayment.
- Current Supplier Payables: Business invoices for goods received that are due immediately.
- Unpaid Wages / Salaries: Amounts due to employees or workers for completed work.
- Immediate Utility & Living Bills: Billed rent, electricity, water, or phone bills currently due.
- Credit Card Balance: The actual statement balance currently due on your Zakat date.
Section 2: Non-Deductible Liabilities & Long-Term Debts
A major misconception is that a person can deduct their entire multi-decade mortgage or long-term loan from current cash, thereby eliminating Zakat for life.
The Hanafi Ruling on Long-Term Loans:
- Entire Long-Term Debt CANNOT Be Deducted: In verified Hanafi Fiqh (Fatawa Razawiyyah, Vol. 10), you cannot subtract the full multi-year future principal of a 20-year or 30-year loan from your current liquid cash.
- Current Year Installment Rule: You are permitted to deduct only the current year's immediate due installment (or upcoming 12 months' due payment) from your Zakatable pool, provided it is currently demanded.
Section 3: Impact of Debt Deduction on Nisab
If subtracting qualifying immediate debts causes your remaining net wealth to drop below the Silver Nisab threshold, Zakat is not obligatory for that year.
Calculation Scenario:
- Gross Cash & Gold: $4,000
- Immediate Due Debt: -$3,600
- Net Wealth: $\$4,000 - \$3,600 = \mathbf{\$400}$.
- Result: If Silver Nisab is $550, net wealth ($400) is below Nisab. No Zakat is due.
