Introduction
In modern financial life, most Muslims do not hold exclusively one type of asset. Instead, a person typically owns a combination of gold jewelry, bank cash, silver items, and business merchandise.
In Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10) and Bahar-e-Shariat (Part 5), Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (رحمه الله عليه) explains the fundamental Hanafi jurisprudential rule for aggregating mixed sub-Nisab assets.
Section 1: The Hanafi Combining Principle
If an individual owns gold below Gold Nisab (less than 7.5 Tolas / 87.48g) AND silver below Silver Nisab (less than 52.5 Tolas / 612.36g), OR owns gold/silver alongside cash or business inventory:
The Rule: These assets are NOT evaluated in isolation. Their monetary values are combined into a single total pool, evaluated in terms of Silver Nisab.

Section 2: Step-by-Step Combination Process
- Calculate Pure Gold Value: Convert gold weight to local currency value.
- Calculate Silver Value: Convert silver weight to local currency value.
- Add Liquid Cash: Add all cash and bank savings.
- Add Trade Inventory: Add selling market value of business stock.
- Deduct Immediate Liabilities: Subtract immediate due debts.
- Compare Total against Silver Nisab: If the net combined total equals or exceeds the Silver Nisab value, 2.5% Zakat is due on the ENTIRE combined sum.
Practical Worked Example
- Gold Owned: 3 Tolas 22K gold jewelry (Value: $2,500).
- Silver Owned: 10 Tolas silver ornament (Value: $120).
- Cash in Savings Account: $600.
- Current Silver Nisab Threshold: $550.
Calculation Walkthrough:
$$ ext{Total Combined Wealth} = \$2,500 + \$120 + \$600 = \mathbf{\$3,220 ext{ USD}}$$
- Nisab Check: $3,220 exceeds Silver Nisab ($550). Zakat is Obligatory.
- Zakat Due (2.5%): $\$3,220 imes 2.5\% = \mathbf{\$80.50 ext{ USD}}$.
