Definition of a Shar‘i Musafir
According to the Hanafi methodology documented in Fatawa Razawiyya and Bahar-e-Shariat, a person becomes a Shar‘i traveller (Musafir) when they embark on a journey with the intention of traveling a distance of 3 Marahil (approximately 57.5 English miles / ~92 kilometers) or more, and they cross the outer boundaries (suburbs/city exit limits) of their hometown.
Simply leaving your house or packing your bags does NOT make you a Musafir. You acquire Musafir status only after physically passing the outer buildings/city limit markers of your town or city.
Core Requirements for Musafir Status
Intention (Niyyah): Clear determination to travel 57.5+ miles / 92+ km in a single journey.
Crossing City Limits: Passing the outermost residential/suburban border of your starting city.
Duration of Stay: Intending to stay less than 15 days at the destination city.
If a person travels 100 km but intends to stay 15 days or more at a single location upon arrival, they become a Muqeem (resident) upon reaching that city.
