Eid Prayer Guide: How to Pray Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha

Learn how to perform the Eid prayer. Step-by-Step guide on the extra Takbeers, timing, Sunnahs, and sermon details in Sunni Islam.

Introduction

Twice a year, Muslims around the world celebrate major spiritual milestones: Eid ul-Fitr (marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan) and Eid ul-Adha (marking the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage and commemorating the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim). Both celebrations begin with a special congregational prayer called the Eid prayer. The Eid prayer is a powerful display of community unity, gratitude, and worship. Because this prayer is performed only twice a year, many Muslims are unsure about its exact method and rulings, which differ from the weekly Jumu'ah or daily prayers. In this guide, we provide a complete, step-by-step walkthrough of the Eid prayer.

  • In the Hanafi school, it is Wajib (necessary) upon all men who are obligated to pray Jumu'ah.
  • In the Hanbali school, it is Fard al-Kifayah (community obligation).

First Rak'ah

  1. Intention (Niyyah): Stand in the rows and make a silent intention to pray the two Rak'ahs of Eid prayer behind the Imam.
  2. Takbeer-e-Tahreemah: The Imam says "Allahu Akbar" to start the prayer. Raise your hands, fold them, and recite the opening praise (Thana) silently.
  3. The Extra Takbeers of the First Rak'ah: The Imam will say "Allahu Akbar" three times (in the Hanafi method):

  1. Recitation: The Imam will recite Surah Al-Fatihah and an additional Surah out loud. Listen silently.
  2. Ruku and Sajdahs: Complete the bowing and prostrations as in a normal prayer.

Second Rak'ah

  1. Stand Up: The Imam stands up for the second Rak'ah.
  2. Recitation: The Imam will recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah out loud.
  3. The Extra Takbeers of the Second Rak'ah: Before going to bowing (Ruku), the Imam will say "Allahu Akbar" three times (in the Hanafi method):
  • For all three Takbeers, raise your hands to your ears and let them drop to your sides.
  • On the fourth Takbeer, without raising your hands, go directly into the bowing (Ruku) position.

(Note: In the Shafi'i method, there are five extra Takbeers before the recitation in the second Rak'ah).

Section 4: Hadith on the Sunnahs of Eid

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established beautiful Sunnah practices to make the day of Eid special.

This was done to meet more people, spread greetings of peace, and show the beauty of Islam in different parts of the city.

"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would not go out on the morning of Eid ul-Fitr until he had eaten some dates... and he would eat an odd number of them." — Narrated by Anas bin Malik, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari

  1. Perform Ghusl: Take a bath in the morning before going to the prayer.
  2. Wear New or Clean Clothes: Dress in your best clothes to show gratitude for Allah's blessings.
  3. Eat Before Eid ul-Fitr, Fast Before Eid ul-Adha: Eat a sweet breakfast (like dates) before leaving for Eid ul-Fitr. For Eid ul-Adha, it is recommended to delay eating until after the prayer, preferably eating from the meat of the sacrifice (Udhiyah/Qurbani).
  4. Give Zakat al-Fitr Early: Ensure you pay your Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) before the Eid prayer starts so it can be distributed to the poor in time for their celebration.

Common Questions (FAQ)

1. What happens if I miss the Eid prayer?

If you miss the Eid prayer in congregation, many scholars recommend that you pray two Rak'ahs at home, either individually or with your family, performing the extra Takbeers.

2. Can women and children attend the Eid prayer?

Yes, the Prophet (peace be upon him) highly encouraged women, children, and even those who were not praying due to their monthly cycles to attend the Eid gathering to witness the goodness and supplications of the Muslims.

3. Why is there no Adhan or Iqamah for Eid?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not call the Adhan or Iqamah for the Eid prayers, as it was established that the community would gather at the known time in the open prayer field (Musalla).
