Введение
In the middle of a busy day, when we are fully immersed in work, studies, or running business affairs, the call to Dhuhr prayer provides a welcome relief. Dhuhr is the midday prayer, positioned to remind us that our ultimate success lies in the remembrance of Allah, not in our daily worldly transactions. Pausing our tasks, walking to the Masjid, performing Wudu, and standing in prayer resets our mind, relieves stress, and gives us the energy to complete the rest of the day with honesty and barakah (blessings). In this guide, we explain the structure, timing, and step-by-step method of Dhuhr.
The Dhuhr prayer has a total of 10 or 12 Rak'ahs (units), divided as follows:
- Four Rak'ahs of Sunnah Mu'akkadah: Prayed before the obligatory Fard prayer (highly recommended).
- Four Rak'ahs of Fard (Obligatory): The core of the Dhuhr prayer.
- Two Rak'ahs of Sunnah Mu'akkadah: Prayed after the Fard prayer.
- Two Rak'ahs of Nafl (Voluntary): Optionally prayed at the very end for extra reward.
Unlike Fajr, the recitation of the Quran during all four Fard Rak'ahs of Dhuhr is performed silently (Sirri) by both the Imam in congregation and the individual praying alone.
Section 2: Step-by-Step Guide to the Fard of Dhuhr
The four Fard Rak'ahs of Dhuhr are performed in two parts, with a middle sitting (Jalsah) for Tashahhud.
- Ruku and Sajdahs: Perform bowing (Ruku) and two prostrations (Sajdahs) with their respective praises, exactly as in Fajr.
- Second Rak'ah: Stand up, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and an additional Surah silently, and perform bowing and prostrations.
- First Tashahhud: After the second Sajdah, sit upright and recite only the Tashahhud ("At-tahiyyatu..."). Do not recite Salat-alan-Nabi or the final Dua yet.
- Stand Up: Say "Allahu Akbar" and stand up for the third Rak'ah.
- Recite Al-Fatihah Only: In the third and fourth Rak'ahs of any Fard prayer, you only recite Surah Al-Fatihah. Do not recite an additional Surah.
- Perform Ruku and Sajdahs: Complete the bowing and prostrations for the third Rak'ah, then stand up for the fourth Rak'ah.
- Fourth Rak'ah: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah silently, perform bowing, and two prostrations.
- Final sitting: Sit upright and recite the Tashahhud, Salat-alan-Nabi, and the final Dua.
- Taslim: Complete the prayer by turning your head to the right and saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah", and then to the left.
Section 3: Quranic Basis and Timing of Dhuhr
The timing of Dhuhr is established by the movement of the sun, beginning when the sun passes its highest point in the sky (the meridian) and starts to decline towards the west.
Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:
"Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night..." — Surah Al-Isra, 17:78
The "decline of the sun" (Zawal) marks the entry of the Dhuhr prayer time. The time window ends when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length (or twice its length, according to the Hanafi school), which marks the start of Asr.
Section 4: Hadith on the Virtues of Dhuhr
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spoke about the unique spiritual openings that happen during the time of Dhuhr.
In an authentic narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"This is an hour in which the gates of heaven are opened, and I love that a righteous deed of mine should ascend to heaven during it." — Narrated by Abdullah bin Sa'ib, Collected in Sunan at-Tirmidhi (Hadith 478)
Regarding guarding the Sunnah prayers before and after Dhuhr, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
«Кто защитит четыре ракаата до зухра и четыре после него, тому Аллах запретит находиться в огне». — Передано Умм Хабибой, собрано в «Сунан Аби Дауд и Сунан ат-Тирмизи»
Section 5: Practical Lessons for the Midday Reset
To get the most benefit out of Dhuhr during a busy workday:
- Take a Real Break: Do not view Dhuhr as another task to tick off. Treat it as a real mental and spiritual break from your computer screens and meetings.
- Arrive Early for the Sunnah: Try to reach the Masjid early enough to pray the 4 Sunnahs before the Fard starts. This helps calm your mind and focus your thoughts.
- Establish Workplace Prayer Areas: If you work in an office far from a Masjid, cooperate with other Muslim colleagues to set up a small prayer room or corner.
Common Questions (FAQ)
1. Can I combine Dhuhr and Asr prayers?
Combining Dhuhr and Asr is only permissible under specific circumstances allowed in Islamic law, such as when traveling (Safar) or during heavy rain (according to some schools). Combining them without a valid legal excuse is not allowed.
If you join the Imam late (e.g., in the third Rak'ah), follow the Imam until he completes the prayer with the Taslim. Do not say Taslim with him; instead, stand up and make up the two Rak'ahs you missed. In those makeup Rak'ahs, you must recite Surah Al-Fatihah and an additional Surah silently.
3. Is the Friday prayer (Jumu'ah) separate from Dhuhr?
Yes, on Fridays, the Jumu'ah prayer replaces the Dhuhr prayer for men who are obligated to attend. Jumu'ah consists of a sermon (Khutbah) followed by two obligatory Rak'ahs recited out loud.
4. What is the rule for Dhuhr on a journey?
5. Why are Dhuhr and Asr prayers silent?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed Dhuhr and Asr silently, and he instructed: "Pray as you have seen me pray" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Scholars also note that during the day, the world is filled with activity, and silent prayers allow for deeper internal reflection.
