Введение
Salah is the most important daily act of worship in a Muslim's life. Because we perform it five times every day, it is easy to fall into bad habits over time, performing the physical movements automatically without paying attention to their correctness. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took great care to correct his companions when they made mistakes in their prayer, saying: "Pray as you have seen me pray" (Sahih al-Bukhari). In this guide, we identify the most common physical and ritual mistakes made during Salah and provide clear guidance on how to avoid them.
Section 1: Rushing the Prayer (Lack of Tumani'nah)
The single most common and serious mistake is rushing through the prayer like a bird pecking seeds. Worshippers often move from bowing to standing, and then straight into prostration, without pausing.
Section 2: Posture Mistakes in Ruku and Sajdah
Correct alignment of the body in bowing and prostration is essential for the physical and spiritual quality of Salah.
Mistake in Ruku (Bowing)
- The Correct Method: Your back should be completely flat, parallel to the ground, so that if water were poured on it, it would not run off. Hold your knees firmly with your fingers spread, and keep your elbows straight.
Mistakes in Sajdah (Prostration)
- Resting the forearms flat on the ground (resembling a dog).
- Lifting the feet off the ground during prostration.
- Worshipping with only the forehead touching the ground while the nose is lifted.
- The Correct Method: You must prostrate on seven bones: the forehead/nose, the two hands, the two knees, and the toes of both feet. Your elbows and forearms must be lifted off the ground, and your fingers should point towards the Qibla.
Section 3: Preceding or Lagging Behind the Imam
When praying in congregation (Jama'at), some worshippers try to race the Imam, going down into bowing or prostration before him, or delaying behind him.
Section 4: Quranic Warnings on Careless Prayer
The Holy Quran warns those who perform their prayers carelessly and without presence of mind.
"So woe to those who pray—[but] who are heedless of their prayer." — Surah Al-Ma'un, 107:4-5
This "heedlessness" includes delaying the prayers past their times, performing the movements lazily, and not paying attention to the rulings and corrections of prayer.
The importance of performing the movements of Salah correctly is highlighted in a famous Hadith known as the Hadith of the Musi' al-Salah (the one who prayed badly).
A man entered the Masjid and prayed quickly, then came and greeted the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet replied to his greeting and said:
"Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." —
This happened three times. Finally, the man said: "By Him Who sent you with the truth, I cannot do any better than this. Please teach me." The Prophet (peace be upon him) then taught him step-by-step, emphasizing that he must bow until he is calm, rise until he stands straight, and prostrate until he is calm in prostration.
Section 6: Practical Lessons: Perfecting Your Postures
To improve the quality of your Salah today:
- Lift Your Forearms: During prostration, ensure there is space between your armpits and the ground, and lift your elbows up.
- Follow, Do Not Race: In Jama'at, wait until you hear the Imam's voice complete the Takbeer before you start moving.
- Study the Prophet's Prayer: Read authentic guides or watch reliable video tutorials that show the exact physical postures of the Prophet's prayer.
Common Questions (FAQ)
1. What if I cannot bend my back fully in Ruku due to back pain?
Islam is a religion of ease. If you have a medical condition, back pain, or injury that prevents you from bending fully, you are exempt. Bend as much as you can without causing yourself harm. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
2. Does looking around or looking up break the prayer?
3. What is the ruling on crossing the legs while sitting?
5. Can I scratch myself during the prayer?
Yes, minor movements to scratch an itch or adjust your clothing are permissible if done quickly and using only one hand. However, continuous, large, unnecessary movements (like adjusting your watch or phone repeatedly) can invalidate the prayer.
