Rules and Etiquettes of Ihram: What is Allowed and Forbidden

Master the essential Hanafi Fiqh rules of Ihram for Hajj and Umrah based on Dawat-e-Islami's Rafiq-ul-Haramayn. Learn prohibited items, Miqat rules, and penalties.

The word Ihram comes from the Arabic root Haraam (meaning "forbidden" or "sacred"). When a pilgrim enters the state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah, certain everyday actions that were previously permissible—such as applying perfume, cutting hair, trimming nails, or covering the head (for men)—become strictly forbidden.

Ihram is not merely wearing two white sheets of cloth; it is a sacred spiritual state of humility, equality, and total submission before Allah Almighty.

Based on authoritative literature published by Dawat-e-Islami in Rafiq-ul-Haramayn and Bahar-e-Shariat (Volume 6), this guide details the rules, etiquettes, forbidden actions, and permissible items during Ihram.

1. What Enters You into the State of Ihram?

Simply putting on the white cloth sheets does NOT make you a Mutrim (person in Ihram).

You officially enter Ihram ONLY when you perform two actions together before crossing the Miqat boundary:

  1. Formulate Niyyat (Intention): Intend in your heart to perform Umrah or Hajj.
  2. Recite the Talbiyah (Labbayk): Recite the official Talbiyah:

"Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka Labbayk..."

Once Niyyat and Talbiyah are combined, you are bound by all Ihram prohibitions.

2. Forbidden Actions During Ihram (Prohibitions)

While in the state of Ihram, the following actions are strictly prohibited (Haraam):

` +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+

STRICT PROHIBITIONS OF IHRAM

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+

1. Applying perfume, scented soap, scented tissues, or Attar
2. Cutting, trimming, or plucking hair from any part of the body
3. Clipping fingernails or toenails
4. Covering the head or face for MEN (caps, turbans, hoods, masks)
5. Covering the face with a veil touching the skin for WOMEN
6. Wearing stitched tailored clothes for MEN (shirts, pants, underwear)
7. Wearing shoes that cover the upper instep bone of the foot for MEN
8. Engaging in marital intimacy, lustful speech, or romantic touch
9. Hunting land animals or harming plants/trees within the Haram
10. Arguing, fighting, or using vulgar language

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ `

3. What is Permissible (Allowed) During Ihram?

Many first-time pilgrims mistakenly believe that basic daily care is forbidden. The following actions are FULLY PERMISSIBLE:

  • Bathing Without Scent: Taking a bath (Ghusl) or shower using unfragranced, scent-free soap or plain water.
  • Washing Clothes: Washing your Ihram sheets if they get dirty.
  • Changing Ihram Sheets: Swapping clean white Ihram sheets for dirty ones.
  • Wearing Money Belts / Backpacks: Wearing a waist belt, money pouch, or shoulder bag to secure passports and currency.
  • Using an Umbrella: Using an umbrella or standing under a roof to block sunlight (provided the umbrella does not rest directly on a man's head).
  • Wearing Eyeglasses / Wristwatches / Rings: Wearing medical glasses, sunglasses, wristwatches, or unadorned rings.
  • Using Unscented Miswak: Cleaning teeth with a natural, unflavored Miswak stick.
  • Using Pain Relief Creams: Applying unperfumed medical ointments for chapped skin or leg chafing.

4. Penalties for Violating Ihram Prohibitions

In Hanafi Fiqh (Bahar-e-Shariat), if a pilgrim violates an Ihram restriction, a penalty (Kaffarah) becomes obligatory depending on the nature of the violation:

Violation Type Example Required Penalty
:--- :--- :---
Major Violation Applying perfume to a full limb, or covering head/face for a full day (12 hrs) Dam (Sacrificing 1 goat/sheep in Makkah Haram)
Minor Violation Applying perfume to small spot, or covering head for less than 1 hour Sadaqah (Giving ~1.6 kg wheat or its cash value to poor)
Clipping All Nails Clipping 4 or 5 nails from 1 hand in one sitting Dam
Clipping Single Nail Clipping just 1 nail Sadaqah

5. Etiquettes of the Talbiyah

  • Men: Should recite the Talbiyah aloud with moderate, respectful volume.
  • Women: Must recite the Talbiyah quietly so only they themselves can hear it.
  • Frequency: Recite the Talbiyah continuously after every Salah, when ascending/descending hills, getting into vehicles, meeting fellow pilgrims, and at dawn.
