In the vibrant city of Kufa, Iraq, around the year 699 CE (80 AH), Numan ibn Thabit — later known to history as Imam Abu Hanifa — was born into a prosperous family of Persian lineage. Born during the era of the Sahaba, young Numan had the blessing of seeing the Senior Companion Anas ibn Malik (R.A.), earning him the distinguished rank of a Tabi'i (Successor).
Initially, young Numan carried on his family's silk trading business in the market of Kufa. He was widely admired for his absolute scrupulousness in trade. Once, when his business partner sold a garment with a slight defect without informing the buyer, Imam Abu Hanifa gave away the entire profit of 30,000 dirhams in charity because the revenue had been tainted by oversight.
His sharp intellect caught the attention of the eminent Kufan scholar Al-Sha'bi, who advised young Numan: "Do not neglect sacred knowledge; I see signs of extraordinary intelligence in you." Taking this advice to heart, Abu Hanifa began studying under Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, dedicating eighteen years to mastering Quranic legal principles and Hadith.
