Episode 01 — The Scholar of Khanpur

In the heart of old Ahmedabad, along the banks of the Sabarmati river in Khanpur, stands the historic complex of Shah Wajihuddin Alvi. Born in Champaner in 1504 CE (910 AH), Hazrat Shah Wajihuddin Alvi (R.A.) rose to become one of the greatest polymath scholars, authors, and spiritual guides in sixteenth-century India.

Gujarat during the 16th century was a global crossroads of trade, culture, and sacred scholarship under the Gujarat Sultanate. Young Wajihuddin demonstrated an astonishing intellect from childhood. By his early twenties, he had mastered fourteen traditional Islamic disciplines, including Tafsir (Quranic exegesis), Hadith studies, Fiqh (jurisprudence), logic, Arabic grammar, rhetoric, astronomy, and mathematics.

Recognizing his profound scholarship, Sultan Mahmud Begada and subsequent Gujarat rulers held Shah Wajihuddin in highest esteem. However, Shah Wajihuddin declined royal court titles and wealth, choosing instead to establish a residential madrasa in Khanpur, Ahmedabad. For over sixty years, he sat on a simple woven mat, teaching hundreds of students who travelled from across India, Arabia, Persia, and Central Asia.
