How to Perform Fajr Prayer: A Complete Guide

Learn how to perform the Fajr (dawn) prayer. Understand its Rak'ahs, timing, Sunnah, and step-by-step method with authentic references.

Introduction

As the night sky begins to fade and the first light of dawn appears on the horizon, the call to prayer (Adhan) echoes through the quiet streets. This is the time for Fajr, the morning prayer. Performing Fajr is one of the most beloved acts of worship to Allah, representing a believer's victory over sleep, comfort, and laziness. Starting your day by standing before your Creator brings immense blessings, light, and protection that lasts throughout the entire day. In this article, we provide a complete, step-by-step guide on how to perform the Fajr prayer, including its structure, timing, and unique rewards.

Section 1: The Structure and Rak'ahs of Fajr

The Fajr prayer consists of a total of four Rak'ahs (units):

  1. Two Rak'ahs of Sunnah Mu'akkadah: These are the emphasized Sunnah units that the Prophet (peace be upon him) always prayed before the obligatory prayer. They are highly rewarded.
  2. Two Rak'ahs of Fard (Obligatory): These are the core obligatory units performed in congregation (if praying at the Masjid) or individually.

During the two obligatory (Fard) Rak'ahs of Fajr, the Imam (or the individual if praying alone) recites the Quran out loud (Jahri) during the standing positions. The Sunnah Rak'ahs are recited silently (Sirri).

Section 2: Step-by-Step Guide to the Fard of Fajr

To perform the two obligatory Rak'ahs of Fajr, follow these steps:

First Rak'ah

  1. Stand and Make Intention (Niyyah): Stand facing the Qibla and make a silent intention to pray the two obligatory Rak'ahs of Fajr.
  2. Takbeer-e-Tahreemah: Raise your hands to your ears (or shoulders) and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest), then fold your hands over your chest (or below the navel, depending on your school of thought).
  3. Recite the Opening Supplication (Thana): Recite: "Subhanak-Allahumma wa bihamdika..."
  4. Recite Surah Al-Fatihah: Seek refuge in Allah ("A'udhu billahi...") and recite Surah Al-Fatihah. Say "Ameen" silently at the end.
  5. Recite an Additional Surah: Recite another short Surah or at least three verses from the Quran (e.g., Surah Al-Ikhlas or Surah Al-Kawthar) out loud.
  6. Go to Ruku (Bowing): Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow down, keeping your back straight and hands on your knees. Recite three times: "Subhana Rabbiyal-Azeem" (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent).
  7. Stand Up (Qiyam): Rise from bowing while saying: "Sami'allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him), followed by: "Rabbana lakal-hamd" (Our Lord, to You belongs all praise).
  10. Perform the Second Sajdah: Say "Allahu Akbar" and prostrate again, repeating the praises three times.

Second Rak'ah

  1. Stand Up: Say "Allahu Akbar" and stand up for the second Rak'ah.
  2. Repeat the Recitation: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by another Surah (out loud).
  3. Perform Ruku and Sajdahs: Perform the bowing and both prostrations exactly as in the first Rak'ah.
  4. Sit for Tashahhud: After the second Sajdah, instead of standing up, remain sitting. Recite the Tashahhud ("At-tahiyyatu lillahi..."), followed by Salat-alan-Nabi ("Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad..."), and a final supplication (Dua Masoorah) such as "Rabbana atina fid-dunya..."
  5. Taslim (Completion): Turn your head to the right and say: "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah" (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you), then turn your head to the left and repeat the greeting.

Section 3: Quranic Emphasis on Fajr

The Quran highlights the Fajr prayer, noting that the angels are witness to the recitation during this blessed time.

The "recitation of dawn" refers to the Fajr prayer, and it is witnessed by both the angels of the night and the angels of the day as they transition.

Section 4: Hadith on the Rewards of Fajr

In an authentic narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"The two Rak'ahs of Sunnah before Fajr are better than this world and everything in it." — Narrated by Aisha, Collected in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 725)

If the voluntary Sunnah carries such a reward, imagine the status of the obligatory Fard!

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also promised safety and protection for those who pray Fajr:

"Whoever prays the morning prayer (Fajr) is under the protection of Allah, so do not let Allah call you to account for anything concerning His protection." — Narrated by Jundub bin Abdullah, Collected in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 657)

  4. Understand the Rewards: Remind yourself before you sleep that praying Fajr guarantees you the protection of Allah for the next 24 hours.

Common Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the exact time window for Fajr?

The Fajr prayer time begins at the entry of true dawn (Subh Sadiq) when a horizontal light appears on the eastern horizon. It ends at the moment the sun begins to rise (sunrise). You must complete your prayer before the sun's disc appears on the horizon.

If you unintentionally sleep through Fajr despite taking precautions (setting alarms, sleeping early), you must perform the prayer as soon as you wake up. This is your "Qada" prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers." (Sahih al-Bukhari).

5. Why is the phrase "Prayer is better than sleep" added to the Fajr Adhan?

This phrase ("As-salatu khayrum-minan-nawm") is added to the second call to prayer for Fajr (Adhan) as a gentle reminder to the community that the eternal spiritual reward of standing before Allah is far greater than the temporary comfort of physical sleep.
