Introduction
- Ruling: Performing it is rewarded, and deliberately neglecting it is a major sin that results in punishment. Denying the obligatory nature of a Fard action can place a person outside the fold of Islam.
- Types of Fard:
- Fard al-Ayn: An individual obligation that every single Muslim must perform, such as the five daily prayers, fasting in Ramadan, and paying Zakah.
- Fard al-Kifayah: A community obligation. If some members of the community perform it, the obligation is lifted from everyone else. If no one performs it, the entire community is sinful. An example is the Janazah (funeral) prayer.
- In Salah: The obligatory units of prayer (e.g., 2 Rak'ahs of Fajr, 4 of Dhuhr, etc.) are Fard.
- Definition (Hanafi School): A Wajib action is a necessary command that is established by text that is not as absolute as the Quranic text, such as a Hadith that has some room for interpretation.
- Ruling: Performing it is rewarded, and neglecting it deliberately is a sin. However, denying the obligation of a Wajib action does not make a person a non-Muslim (unlike Fard).
- In Salah: Examples of Wajib actions include reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, performing the first sitting (Tashahhud) in a three or four-unit prayer, and praying the Witr prayer after Isha. If a Wajib action is missed forgetfully, it must be corrected by performing Sajdah Sahw (Prostration of Forgetfulness) at the end of the prayer.
Section 3: Sunnah (Recommended)
Sunnah refers to the actions, sayings, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In legal terms, it refers to recommended actions that are not obligatory but carry great spiritual value.
- Ruling: Performing a Sunnah action brings great rewards and brings us closer to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Neglecting it is not a sin, but consistently neglecting it is discouraged as it deprives us of blessings.
- Sunnah Mu'akkadah (Emphasized Sunnah): Actions the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed regularly and rarely missed, such as the 2 Rak'ahs before Fajr and the 4 Rak'ahs before Dhuhr.
- Sunnah Ghair-Mu'akkadah (Non-emphasized Sunnah): Actions the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed sometimes and left at other times, such as the 4 Rak'ahs before Asr.
Section 4: Nafl (Voluntary)
Nafl (also called Mustahabb, Mandub, or voluntary) refers to extra deeds that a Muslim chooses to perform out of their own free will to seek the pleasure of Allah.
- Ruling: Performing Nafl actions is highly rewarded. If someone does not perform them, there is no sin or blame on them.
- In Salah: Examples of Nafl prayers include Tahajjud (night prayer), Duha (forenoon prayer), Ishraq (sunrise prayer), and voluntary prayers performed during times when prayer is not prohibited.
- The Role of Nafl: The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained that on the Day of Judgment, our voluntary deeds (Nafl) will be used to make up for any gaps or shortcomings in our obligatory deeds (Fard).
Section 5: Quranic and Hadith Basis
The Quran commands obedience to Allah and His Messenger, establishing the authority of these rulings.
"O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you..." — Surah An-Nisa, 4:59
In a famous Hadith Qudsi, Allah (SWT) explains the beauty of drawing closer to Him through obligatory and voluntary deeds:
"My servant does not draw closer to Me with anything more beloved to Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw closer to Me with voluntary deeds (Nawafil) until I love him." — Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 6502)
To optimize your daily worship using this structure, follow these three rules:
- Secure the Fard First: Never let voluntary actions get in the way of obligatory actions. For example, staying up late for voluntary prayers (Nafl) is good, but not if it causes you to sleep through the obligatory Fajr prayer (Fard).
- Use Sunnah to Protect Fard: Sunnah prayers act as a buffer. They prepare your mind for focus before the Fard prayer and help you ease out of the state of worship after it.
- Learn the Rulings of Forgetfulness: Understand what to do if you miss a Wajib or Fard action during prayer, so you can correct your Salah on the spot.
Common Questions (FAQ)
If you miss a Fard action (like the prostration or bowing) inside your Salah, either intentionally or forgetfully, your prayer is invalid. You must repeat the entire prayer. Sajdah Sahw cannot make up for a missed Fard action.
2. What happens if I miss a Wajib action forgetfully?
If you miss a Wajib action (like reciting Surah Al-Fatihah or sitting for the first Tashahhud) forgetfully, you must perform Sajdah Sahw at the end of your prayer. This makes the prayer valid, and you do not need to repeat it. If you miss it deliberately, your prayer is invalid and must be repeated.
The Sunnah Rawatib are the regular, emphasized Sunnah prayers associated with the five daily prayers. They total 12 Rak'ahs daily: 2 before Fajr, 4 before Dhuhr and 2 after, 2 after Maghrib, and 2 after Isha. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever prays these daily, Allah will build a house for them in Paradise.
The Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools do not make a technical distinction between Fard and Wajib because they believe that any command from Allah and His Messenger is obligatory, regardless of the strength of the textual evidence. The distinction is unique to the Hanafi school's methodology.
