Step-by-Step Umrah Guide for Beginners

Master the complete step-by-step Umrah guide for first-time pilgrims. Learn the 4 core pillars (Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, Halq/Taqseer) based on Dawat-e-Islami.

Performing Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah Mukarramah) is one of the most spiritually transformative journeys a Muslim can undertake. Unlike Hajj, which occurs during specific days of the Hijri month of Dhul-Hijjah, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year.

For a first-time pilgrim, embarking on this sacred journey can feel overwhelming due to unfamiliar Arabic terminology and rituals. However, Umrah is remarkably simple when broken down into logical "baby steps".

Based on official Dawat-e-Islami guidebooks published in Method of Umrah (Umrah ka Tarika) and Rafiq-ul-Haramayn by Ameer-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat Maulana Ilyas Qadri, this beginner-friendly guide walks you through the 4 core pillars of Umrah step-by-step.

Overview: The 4 Baby Steps of Umrah

STEP 1: IHRAM ────────► Enter sacred state at Miqat boundary & recite Talbiyah │ ▼ STEP 2: TAWAF ────────► Perform 7 counter-clockwise rounds around the Ka'bah │ ▼ STEP 3: SA'I ────────► Walk 7 laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah │ ▼ STEP 4: HALQ / TAQSEER ► Shave head (men) or trim hair 1 inch (men/women)

Step 1: Entering the Sacred State of Ihram

Before crossing the boundary surrounding the sacred territory of Makkah (known as the Miqat):

  1. Perform Physical Hygiene: Clip nails, trim unwanted hair, use Miswak, take a bath (Ghusl), and apply non-alcoholic perfume (Attar) to your body before putting on Ihram sheets.
  2. Wear Ihram Garments:
  • For Men: Wear two unstitched white cloth sheets—one wrapped around the waist (Rida) and one draped over the shoulders (Izar). Do not wear undergarments, shirts, or headcaps. Wear footwear that leaves the upper instep bone of the feet exposed.
  • For Women: Wear regular loose, modest Islamic clothing covering the entire body except the hands and face. Women must NOT cover their face with a veil touching the skin while in Ihram.
  1. Offer 2 Rak'ahs Sunnah-tul-Ihram: Offer 2 Nafl Rak'ahs (covering your head during prayer).
  2. Formulate Niyyat (Intention): Uncover head (men) and declare in your heart:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِي وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّي ("Allahumma innee ureedul-'Umrata fa-yassirhaa lee wa taqabbalhaa minnee.") (O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah. Make it easy for me and accept it from me.)

  1. Recite the Talbiyah (Labbayk): Recite the Talbiyah aloud (men) or softly (women):

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ ، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ ، لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka Labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. La sharika lak." (Here I am, O Allah, here I am! Here I am, You have no partner, here I am! Verily all praise, blessings, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner!)

Once Niyyat and Talbiyah are made, you are officially in Ihram! All Ihram restrictions (no perfume, no cutting hair/nails, no hunting/marital relations) apply immediately.

Step 2: Performing Tawaf Around the Holy Ka'bah

Upon arriving at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah Mukarramah:

  1. Enter Masjid with Right Foot: Recite the entering Dua and gaze upon the magnificent Holy Ka'bah with deep humility and tears of gratitude.
  2. Stop Reciting Talbiyah: The moment you begin Tawaf, cease reciting the Talbiyah.
  3. Idtiba' (Men Only): Uncover your right shoulder by passing the upper Ihram sheet under your right armpit and laying it over your left shoulder.
  4. Start at Hajar-al-Aswad (Black Stone): Align yourself with the green light indicator inline with the Black Stone corner.
  5. Formulate Tawaf Niyyat: "O Allah, I intend to perform 7 rounds of Tawaf of Your Sacred House for Umrah."
  6. Perform Istilam: Face the Black Stone, raise both hands up to earlobes with palms facing the Stone saying "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar", and kiss your palms.
  7. Complete 7 Rounds (Shawt):
  • Walk counter-clockwise keeping the Ka'bah to your left.
  • Raml (Men Only in Rounds 1-3): Walk briskly with short steps and chest puffed out during the first 3 rounds.
  • Between Rukn Yamani & Hajar-al-Aswad: Recite:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ ("Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.")

  1. Pray 2 Rak'ahs Wajib-ut-Tawaf: Cover right shoulder (men), move to Maqam-e-Ibrahim (or anywhere in Masjid al-Haram), and pray 2 Rak'ahs.
  2. Drink Zamzam Water: Stand facing Qiblah, drink Zamzam water to your fill, and make Dua.

Step 3: Performing Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

  1. Proceed to Mount Safa: Walk toward the hill of Safa inside the Sa'i gallery.
  2. Recite Quranic Verse:

إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ ("Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah.") (Verily Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.)

  1. Face the Ka'bah from Safa: Raise hands in Dua, declare Allah's greatness (Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah), and make personal Duas.
  2. Walk Towards Marwah (Lap 1): Walk down the corridor toward Marwah.
  • Green Lights (Men Only): When reaching the area marked with green overhead lights (Milayn Akhdarayn), men should jog briskly until the second green light.
  1. Reach Marwah: Make Dua facing Qiblah at Marwah. This completes 1 lap.
  2. Complete 7 Laps Total:
  • Lap 1: Safa ➔ Marwah
  • Lap 2: Marwah ➔ Safa
  • Lap 3: Safa ➔ Marwah
  • Lap 4: Marwah ➔ Safa
  • Lap 5: Safa ➔ Marwah
  • Lap 6: Marwah ➔ Safa
  • Lap 7: Safa ➔ Marwah (Sa'i finishes at Marwah!)
  1. Pray 2 Nafl Rak'ahs: Offer 2 Nafl Rak'ahs inside the Sa'i hall.

Step 4: Halq or Taqseer (Exiting Ihram)

  1. For Men:
  • Halq (Shaving Entire Head): Shaving the complete head is most virtuous (Mustahab), earning triple blessings.
  • Taqseer (Trimming): Or trim at least 1 inch (length of a fingertip) from hair across the entire head evenly.
  1. For Women:
  • Gather all hair together and trim 1 inch (fingertip length) from the bottom ends of the hair bundle. Women MUST NEVER shave their heads (Halq is forbidden for women).

Once Halq or Taqseer is completed, Alhamdulillah! Your Umrah is complete! All Ihram prohibitions are lifted, and you return to normal clothing.
