Practical FAQs on Daily Salah, Jamaat, and Forgotten Acts

Clear Fiqh answers to common daily prayer questions: Sajdah Sahw, joining late, forgotten Rak'ahs, and Imam follower rules based on Dawat-e-Islami.

Daily prayer (Salah) is governed by precise jurisprudence (Fiqh). When worshippers encounter minor errors, forgetfulness, or late arrival during congregational prayer (Jama'at), doubts often arise regarding how to fix the prayer.

Based on official Hanafi jurisprudence published by Dawat-e-Islami in Namaz ke Ahkam (Laws of Salah) and Bahar-e-Shariat (Volume 3), this guide answers the most practical daily Salah questions.

1. FAQs on Forgotten Acts & Sajdah Sahw

Q1: When is Sajdah Sahw (Prostration of Forgetfulness) mandatory?

Answer: Sajdah Sahw becomes mandatory (Wajib) ONLY when you unintentionally omit a Wajib act of Salah, or delay a Wajib/Fard act by the length of one Rukn (e.g., reciting SubhanAllah 3 times).

  • Omitting a Fard act invalidates the prayer (must repeat entire prayer).
  • Omitting a Sunnah act does NOT require Sajdah Sahw.

Q2: What is the exact method of performing Sajdah Sahw?

Answer: In the final sitting (Qa'dah Akhirah), recite Tashahhud (Attahiyyaat), turn your face to the RIGHT for Salam once, then immediately perform two prostrations (Sujood) with Takbeer, sit back up, recite complete Tashahhud, Durood, Dua, and finish with Salam to both sides.

2. FAQs on Congregational Prayer (Jamaat)

Q3: Should a follower (Muqtadi) recite Surah Al-Fatiha behind the Imam?

Answer: In Hanafi Fiqh (Bahar-e-Shariat), a follower behind the Imam does NOT recite Surah Al-Fatiha or additional Surahs—whether the prayer is silent (Dhuhr/Asr) or out loud (Fajr/Maghrib/Isha). The recitation of the Imam suffices for all followers behind him. The follower stands silently listening or concentrating on Allah's remembrance.

Q4: What if I arrive when the Imam is in Ruku'?

Answer: If you say Takbeer-e-Tahreema ("Allahu Akbar") while standing, and then perform Ruku' with the Imam before he lifts his head, you have caught that Rak'ah. You do not need to make it up later.

3. Quick Reference Summary Table

Situation Required Action Status of Prayer
:--- :--- :---
Forgot 1st Tashahhud & stood up Do NOT return; perform Sajdah Sahw Valid with Sajdah Sahw

Forgot to recite Surah after Fatiha in 1st Rak'ah Recite Surah in 3rd/4th Rak'ah + Sajdah Sahw Valid
Spoke 1 word during prayer Salah is broken; restart prayer Invalid

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the Imam performs Sajdah Sahw? Do followers perform it too?

Yes! All followers behind the Imam must follow the Imam in Sajdah Sahw, even if a follower joined the Jamaat late as a Masbuq.
