Masjid Etiquettes: Rulings and Manners in the House of Allah

Learn the essential etiquettes and manners when visiting the Masjid, from silence to entering with the right foot and social rules.

Introduction

The Masjid (mosque) is the spiritual heart of the Muslim community. In the Quran, mosques are honored with the title of Buyut Allah (The Houses of Allah). Because these are sacred spaces dedicated to the remembrance, prayer, and worship of our Creator, they deserve the highest level of respect, clean habits, and peaceful behavior. When we enter a Masjid, we are guests in the house of the King of kings. Therefore, understanding and practicing the correct etiquettes of the Masjid is essential for every visitor. In this article, we outline the primary rules and manners to follow when visiting the Masjid.

Section 1: Entering and Leaving the Masjid

Memasuki Masjid

  1. Enter with the Right Foot: Step into the Masjid leading with your right foot.
  2. Bacalah Doa Masuk: Ucapkan:

"Bismillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahummah-tah li abwaba rahmatik."

Meninggalkan Masjid

  1. Melangkah dengan Kaki Kiri: Melangkah memimpin dengan kaki kiri.
  2. Recite the Leaving Supplication: Say:

"Bismillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik." (In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.)

Section 2: Tahiyyat al-Masjid (Greeting the Mosque)

When you enter the Masjid, it is highly recommended (and considered a necessary etiquette) not to sit down until you have performed a quick prayer of welcome.

This prayer is called Tahiyyat al-Masjid (Greeting the Mosque). It consists of two Rak'ahs of voluntary (Nafl) prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit down until he has prayed two Rak'ahs." — Riwayat Abu Qatadah, Terhimpun dalam Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

If you enter and the obligatory Fard prayer has already started, or the Iqamah is being called, you should join the congregation immediately, and this replaces the Greeting of the Mosque.

  • Do Not Raise Your Voice: Avoid loud talking, joking, or arguing. Even raising your voice in reciting the Quran is discouraged if it distracts other people who are praying or reading nearby.

Because we stand before Allah and sit close to other worshippers, maintaining high standards of personal hygiene is a duty.

Mengenakan Pakaian Bersih

Wear clean, modest, and loose clothing that covers the Awrah properly. Worshippers should avoid wearing socks with bad odors, or clothing with offensive prints or slogans.

The Warning on Odors

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was very sensitive about clean breath, warning those who ate raw garlic or onions to stay away from the congregation until the smell had faded.

In an authentic Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever eats garlic or onions, let him keep away from us—or keep away from our mosque—and let him stay in his house." — Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

This principle applies to cigarette smoke, body odor, and any strong, unpleasant smell that might disturb fellow worshippers or the angels.

  3. Keep the Masjid Clean: Dispose of tissues, plastic cups, and books in their proper places. Treat the mosque's property with more care than your own home.
  4. Greet Worshippers: Say "Assalamu Alaikum" to those you know and those you do not know. It builds love in the community.
  5. Sit in the first empty space: Do not walk over people or squeeze into tight rows if there is plenty of space in the back.

Common Questions (FAQ)

1. Bolehkah orang dalam keadaan najis berat masuk Masjid?

No, a person who is in a state of major ritual impurity (such as a woman during her monthly cycle, or someone who requires Ghusl) is not permitted to sit or remain inside the main prayer hall of the Masjid. They can, however, pass through the building quickly if necessary, or sit in separate non-prayer areas like offices or classrooms.

2. What should I do if my phone rings during the prayer?

If your phone starts ringing while you are standing in prayer, you should immediately reach into your pocket and silence it using one hand. This minor movement is fully permissible and necessary to prevent further distraction to the congregation.

3. Is it permissible to sleep inside the Masjid?

(QS Ta-Ha, 20:12).
