Cara Sholat Asar: Panduan Lengkap

Learn how to perform the Asr (afternoon) prayer. Understand its Rak'ahs, timing, Sunnah, and step-by-step method with authentic references.

Introduction

As the busy midday hours pass and the sun begins its journey down towards the western horizon, the call for Asr prayer is heard. Asr is the afternoon prayer. In the Quran, it is specifically referred to by many commentators as the "middle prayer" (Al-Salat al-Wusta). This is a time when people are often finishing their workday, picking up their children from school, or wrapping up their chores. Because of this busy transition, guarding the Asr prayer requires extra commitment and is highly beloved to Allah. In this guide, we break down the structure, timing, and step-by-step method of Asr.

Section 1: The Structure and Rak'ahs of Asr

The Asr prayer consists of a total of 4 or 8 Rak'ahs (units):

  1. Four Rak'ahs of Sunnah Ghair-Mu'akkadah: An optional but highly rewarded Sunnah prayed before the Fard prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed this sometimes and left it at other times.
  2. Four Rak'ahs of Fard (Obligatory): The core obligatory units of Asr.

Unlike Fajr, and exactly like Dhuhr, the recitation of the Quran in all four Fard Rak'ahs of Asr is performed silently (Sirri) by both the Imam and the individual praying alone. There are no post-Sunnah or Nafl prayers immediately after Asr, as voluntary prayers are prohibited from the completion of Asr until sunset.

Section 2: Step-by-Step Guide to the Fard of Asr

The four Fard Rak'ahs of Asr are performed exactly like the Fard of Dhuhr, using the silent recitation method:

First and Second Rak'ahs

  1. Intention and Takbeer: Stand facing the Qibla, make your intention to pray the four obligatory Rak'ahs of Asr, raise your hands, say "Allahu Akbar", and fold them.
  2. Recitation: Recite the opening supplication (Thana), Surah Al-Fatihah, and an additional Surah silently.
  3. Ruku and Sajdahs: Perform the bowing (Ruku) and two prostrations (Sajdahs) with their respective praises, exactly as in Dhuhr.
  4. Second Rak'ah: Stand up, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and an additional Surah silently, and perform bowing and prostrations.
  5. First Tashahhud: After the second Sajdah, sit upright and recite only the Tashahhud ("At-tahiyyatu..."). Do not recite Salat-alan-Nabi or the final Dua.

Third and Fourth Rak'ahs

  1. Stand Up: Say "Allahu Akbar" and stand up for the third Rak'ah.
  2. Recite Al-Fatihah Only: In the third and fourth Rak'ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah silently. Do not recite an additional Surah.

Bagian 3: Peringatan Al-Qur'an dan "Doa Tengah"

The Quran places special emphasis on guarding all prayers, with a specific mention of the "middle prayer," which scholars identify as Asr.

Allah SWT menyatakan:

— Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238

By singling out the middle prayer (Asr), Allah highlights that this prayer is the most vulnerable to being missed due to the distractions of the late afternoon.

Section 4: Hadith Warnings on Neglecting Asr

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spoke in very strong terms about the seriousness of missing the Asr prayer, comparing it to losing one's entire family and wealth.

In an authentic Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and his wealth." — Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

In another narration, he explained the loss of good deeds:

"Whoever abandons the Asr prayer, his good deeds will be ruined." — Narrated by Buraydah, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 553)

Conversely, he promised Paradise to those who guard Fajr and Asr:

"He who prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise." — Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

Bagian 5: Pelajaran Praktis Menjaga Ashar

To ensure you never miss or delay your Asr prayer:

  3. Set a Work Boundary: When the Asr time begins, step away from your desk or tasks for ten minutes. It is a boundary that protects your spiritual well-being.
  4. Pray the Sunnah: Praying the 4 optional Rak'ahs before Asr brings a special supplication of mercy from the Prophet: "May Allah show mercy to a person who prays four Rak'ahs before Asr." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi).

3. What if I only catch the first Takbeer of Asr before the sunset?

If you manage to complete at least one entire Rak'ah (including its Sajdahs) of Asr before the sun begins to set, you have caught the prayer on time, and your prayer is valid. However, you should strive never to delay it to this point.
