As humans, we are naturally prone to forgetfulness, distraction, and error. Even during our most sacred acts of worship, such as Salah, our minds can wander, causing us to make mistakes in the number of Rak'ahs we have performed or the sequence of steps. Recognizing this human weakness, Allah (SWT) in His infinite mercy has provided a beautiful mechanism to correct these errors without requiring us to repeat the entire prayer. This mechanism is called Sajdah Sahw (The Prostration of Forgetfulness). Understanding how and when to perform Sajdah Sahw is essential for every Muslim to protect the validity of their daily prayers.
Sajdah Sahw is only required when specific types of mistakes are made during the prayer:
- Omitting a Wajib (Necessary) Action Forgetfully: If you forget to perform a Wajib action of Salah, such as reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, reciting an additional Surah in the first two Rak'ahs, sitting for the first Tashahhud, or reciting Dua Qunut in Witr.
- Adding an Action Forgetfully: If you add an extra action to the prayer, such as performing an extra bowing (Ruku), an extra prostration (Sajdah), or standing up for an extra Rak'ah.
- Delaying a Pillar (Rukn): If you delay performing an obligatory action (Rukn) due to confusion or thinking.
Important Note: Sajdah Sahw cannot make up for a missed Fard (Obligatory) Pillar (such as bowing or prostrating). If a Fard action is missed, the prayer is invalid, and you must repeat the entire prayer. Similarly, missing a Sunnah action does not require Sajdah Sahw.
Section 2: How to Perform Sajdah Sahw
- Complete the final sitting, reciting the Tashahhud, Salat-alan-Nabi, and the final Dua.
- Before saying the final Salam, say "Allahu Akbar" and go down into prostration (Sajdah). Recite the normal praises three times.
Method 2: After the Taslim (Hanafi School)
- In the final sitting, recite the Tashahhud only.
- Turn your head to the right and say one Salam: "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah".
- Immediately say "Allahu Akbar" and perform two prostrations (Sajdahs) with their normal praises, sitting briefly between them.
- Complete the prayer by performing the full Taslim (Salam) to the right and left.
Section 3: Hadith Evidences on Sajdah Sahw
— Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
In another narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) explained what to do in case of doubt:
"If one of you doubts in his prayer and does not know whether he has prayed three or four Rak'ahs, let him cast aside doubt and build upon what he is certain of (the lower number). Then let him perform two prostrations before saying the Salam." — Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Collected in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 571)
Here are practical rules for common scenarios:
- Forgetting the First Tashahhud: If you stand up for the third Rak'ah forgetting the first sitting, and you realize it before standing fully straight, sit back down and recite the Tashahhud. If you have already stood fully straight, do not sit back down; complete the prayer and perform Sajdah Sahw at the end.
While Sajdah Sahw is a mercy, we should strive to minimize mistakes by improving our focus:
- Understand what you recite: Focus on the meaning of the verses to keep your mind from wandering.
- Learn the Rulings: Take time to study the details of Sajdah Sahw so you can act confidently when a mistake occurs.
- Slow Down: Rushing through your prayer is the primary cause of forgetfulness. Take your time in each posture.
If you realized you missed a Wajib action shortly after saying the Salam, and you haven't faced away from the Qibla or spoken to anyone, you can immediately perform the two prostrations, sit for Tashahhud, and say Salam again. If a long time has passed or you have broken your Wudu, your prayer is still valid according to some scholars, while others recommend repeating it if a major Wajib was missed.
2. Can I perform Sajdah Sahw for forgetting a Sunnah action?
No, Sajdah Sahw is not legislated for missing a Sunnah action (like raising your hands for Takbeer or reciting a specific supplication). Performing Sajdah Sahw for a Sunnah action is unnecessary and discouraged.
3. What if I make another mistake during Sajdah Sahw?
4. What if I doubt whether I made a mistake or not?
If the doubt is just a passing thought with no evidence, ignore it. You should only perform Sajdah Sahw if you are reasonably certain that you missed a Wajib action or added something to the prayer.
5. Why is it called the "Prostration of Forgetfulness"?
It is called Sajdah Sahw because "Sahw" in Arabic means to overlook, forget, or be distracted. The prostrations serve as a correction for these human oversights and humiliate Satan, who tries to distract us from our worship.
