(In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.)

Section 2: Tahiyyat al-Masjid (Greeting the Mosque)

This prayer is called Tahiyyat al-Masjid (Greeting the Mosque). It consists of two Rak'ahs of voluntary (Nafl) prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit down until he has prayed two Rak'ahs." — Narrated by Abu Qatadah, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

If you enter and the obligatory Fard prayer has already started, or the Iqamah is being called, you should join the congregation immediately, and this replaces the Greeting of the Mosque.

Section 3: Maintaining Silence and Peace

The Masjid is a place of quiet reflection, Quranic recitation, and focused prayer. Worshippers come to escape the noise of the world. Therefore, creating noise or distraction is strictly disliked.

Wearing Clean Clothes

Wear clean, modest, and loose clothing that covers the Awrah properly. Worshippers should avoid wearing socks with bad odors, or clothing with offensive prints or slogans.

The Warning on Odors

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was very sensitive about clean breath, warning those who ate raw garlic or onions to stay away from the congregation until the smell had faded.

In an authentic Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

— Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah, Collected in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

This principle applies to cigarette smoke, body odor, and any strong, unpleasant smell that might disturb fellow worshippers or the angels.

Section 5: Practical Lessons for Regular Mosque Goers

To make your visits to the Masjid pleasant and rewarding:

  1. Walk in Peace: Walk to the Masjid calmly and with dignity. Do not run, even if you hear the Iqamah starting. The Prophet said: "Whatever you catch of the prayer, pray, and whatever you miss, complete." (Sahih al-Bukhari).
  5. Sit in the first empty space: Do not walk over people or squeeze into tight rows if there is plenty of space in the back.

1. Can a person in a state of major impurity enter the Masjid?

Sleeping in the Masjid is permissible for travelers, those performing Itikaf (spiritual seclusion during Ramadan), and those who have no home. However, regular residents should avoid sleeping in the prayer hall during prayer times to avoid blocking space.

4. Can non-Muslims visit a Masjid?

Yes, non-Muslims are permitted to visit the Masjid for educational tours, interfaith events, or to learn about Islam, provided they dress modestly, remove their shoes, and respect the sacredness of the space.

5. Why do we remove our shoes before entering the prayer hall?

Removing our shoes is a practical way to preserve the purity (Taharah) of the carpets upon which we place our faces in prostration. It also mimics the command of Allah to Moses when he approached the sacred valley of Tuwa: "Remove your sandals, indeed you are in the sacred valley..." (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:12).
