Mustahab and Makruh Timings for Daily Salah: Hanafi Fiqh Guide

Understand the recommended (Mustahab) and disliked (Makruh) time windows for daily Salah according to Hanafi jurisprudence and Dawat-e-Islami's Bahar-e-Shariat.

Every obligatory Salah has a specific time window during which it remains valid. However, within that overall valid timeframe, Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) categorizes specific moments as Mustahab (desirable / recommended) and Makruh (disliked / discouraged).

Praying at the Mustahab time yields greater spiritual reward, while intentionally delaying Salah into a Makruh window without a legitimate Islamic excuse (Uzr) is sinful.

Based on official publications by Dawat-e-Islami in Bahar-e-Shariat (Volume 3) and Laws of Salah, this article details the recommended and forbidden timings for all 5 daily prayers, voluntary (Nafl) prayers, and sun-position transitions.

1. Forbidden and Makruh Times for All Prayers

In Hanafi Fiqh, there are three specific times when offering any Salah (whether Fard, Nafl, or Qada) is strictly forbidden (Tahreemi Makruh):

The Three Forbidden Solar Windows

  1. Sunrise (Tulu'-e-Aftab): From the moment the upper rim of the sun appears above the horizon until it rises approximately 20 minutes (the height of a spear / 12-15 degrees).
  2. True Noon (Zawal / Nisf-ul-Nahar): When the sun reaches its zenith (highest vertical point in the sky) until it begins to decline towards the West. This lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes before Dhuhr time starts.
  3. Sunset (Ghurub-e-Aftab): When the sun turns yellow/orange and loses its brightness until it completely sets (approx. 20 minutes before Maghrib).
  • Exception: If you have not yet prayed that specific day's Asr prayer, you must pray it even during sunset, though delaying it until the sun turns yellow is Makruh Tahreemi.

[!CAUTION] Prostration of Tilawat and Janazah During Forbidden Times Performing Sajdah Tilawat (Recitation Prostration) or Janazah (Funeral) prayer during these three forbidden times is also Makruh Tahreemi, unless a funeral arrives unexpectedly and needs immediate burial.

A. Fajr Prayer (Dawn)

  • Start Time: True Dawn (Subh-e-Sadiq).
  • Mustahab Time (For Men): Isfar β€” Delaying Fajr until the sky brightens clearly in the morning light, while leaving enough time so that if a mistake is discovered, 40 to 50 Verses can be recited slowly and the prayer can be repeated in Wudu before sunrise.
  • Mustahab Time (For Women): Women should pray Fajr early at the very beginning of its time (Ghalas / initial darkness) at home.
  • Makruh Time: Delaying Fajr so close to sunrise that if an error occurs, there is no time left to repeat the prayer comfortably.

B. Dhuhr Prayer (Noon)

  • Start Time: Immediately after the sun passes its zenith (Zawal).
  • Mustahab Time in Summer (Ibrad): Delaying Dhuhr slightly until the extreme heat subsides, making it comfortable for worshippers to walk to the Masjid.
  • Mustahab Time in Winter: Offering Dhuhr early at the beginning of its time.
  • Makruh Time: Delaying Dhuhr so late that the shadow of an object reaches twice its length (entering Asr time boundary).

C. Asr Prayer (Late Afternoon)

  • Start Time: According to the dominant Hanafi opinion (Mithlayn), Asr begins when the shadow of an object (excluding its midday shadow) becomes twice its length.
  • Mustahab Time: Delaying Asr slightly until the sun cools down, provided the sun does not turn pale/yellow.
  • Makruh Time (Makruh Tahreemi): Delaying Asr until the sun turns yellow and can be looked at directly without dazzling the eyes (approx. 20 minutes before sunset).

D. Maghrib Prayer (Sunset)

  • Start Time: Immediately after the sun completely disappears below the horizon.
  • Mustahab Time: Hasten Maghrib! Offering Maghrib immediately at the start of its time is Sunnah.
  • Makruh Time (Makruh Tahreemi): Delaying Maghrib without a valid travel or medical excuse until the stars appear densely in the sky (approx. 40-45 minutes after sunset).

E. Isha Prayer (Night)

  • Start Time: When the red and white twilight (Shafaq) disappears completely from the Western horizon.
  • Mustahab Time: Delaying Isha until the first third of the night has passed.
  • Mubah Time: Delaying up to the middle of the night (Nisf-ul-Layl).
  • Makruh Time (Makruh Tahreemi): Delaying Isha past the middle of the night until Fajr without a valid excuse, as it risks sleeping through Isha.

Nafl Prayer Preferred Time Window Virtues & Notes
:--- :--- :---
Tahajjud Last third of the night before Fajr Highest voluntary prayer; sins forgiven
Ishraq 15-20 minutes after complete sunrise Equal to the reward of Hajj and Umrah
Chasht (Duha) When the sun has risen high and heat increases Expresses gratitude for all body joints
Awwabeen 6 Rak'ahs performed after Maghrib Fard & Sunnah Tremendous spiritual protection

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I offer Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid after Asr or Fajr?

In Hanafi Fiqh, offering any voluntary (Nafl) prayer after performing the Fard of Fajr (until sunrise) or after performing the Fard of Asr (until sunset) is Makruh Tanzihi. During these two windows, focus on Quran recitation, Dhikr, or Salawat instead.
